John Merrill

President | Shareholder | Chief Investment Officer

John founded Tanglewood in 1979 as Houston’s first fee-only financial planning and investment management firm. Tanglewood’s principles then are the same as they are now: Clients first! — financial advice free from product sales and conflicts of interest.

John believes in going the extra mile for his clients, starting with getting to know their family, financial situation, and legacy goals. He presents clients with the full range of options, explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each, so they can make informed decisions with confidence. From there, John and the full Tanglewood team work side-by-side with clients to see plans through to completion. The best plans are laid out years in advance and require ongoing monitoring.

Today, John personally manages over $1.6 billion in client assets. He has been recognized by CNBC, Barron’s, and Worth magazine as one of the top advisors in the country. His television appearances include CNBC, Bloomberg TV, and the Fox Business channel, and his commentary has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Investor’s Business Daily, and the Houston Chronicle. He served on Charles Schwab’s Advisory Board from 2007 to 2008.

John has written or co-written seven books on portfolio management, including Outperforming the Market (McGraw Hill, 1998), Beyond Stocks (1997), and most recently Perpetual Wealth, Strategies for Financial Freedom, co-authored with his son Brian and Tom Bruce.

John and his wife Diane are active with education and philanthropic organizations. John serves as chairman of the Financial Literacy Board, a nonprofit endowment at the University of Texas at Arlington. Diane is a past trustee and board member of the Houston Holocaust Museum and currently volunteers at the Houston SPCA. Both are avid golfers and enjoy traveling.

There is absolutely nothing more rewarding than helping clients create a plan that meets all of their goals and that balances the tradeoffs between current and future needs.

For me, it is all about the client, getting to know them, appreciating their personal needs and formulating a strategy that helps them achieve what matters most to them.
